Will Pearson: A look at our municipal election and what lies ahead for the current council in the next four years.

Music selection: “Drowning Simulator”-Effigy Girl This is a very Peterborough-centric focused podcast but I will try and explain a few things to any possible outsiders. Will Pearson(@quillpearson) is a co-founder of an excellent local newspaper called “Peterborough Currernts”(https://peterboroughcurrents.ca). We discuss our recent municipal election from October 24, 2022. Jeff Leal is our new mayor but “new” is not an accurate term for Leal. He is a past city councillor and was MPP for 15 years(2003-2018). Why did he end up winning a resounding fashion? Is it accurate to say that the current council elected is overall a centre-right collective? What are the main issues Peterborough faces in the next 4 years? Are municipalities in Ontario in a hopeless position? Are we still providing a 24/7 shelter after March 31? How are going to provide affordable housing in our city? What is the proper balance of power between our elected officials and the city bureaucrats? As well, Pearson does a great job educating me on the story of Peterborough Housing Corporation(PHC), the limits of an addiction and treatment centre, the 484 possible rent-geared-to-income housing units by 2029, our tragic transit situation (https://peterboroughcurrents.ca/newsletters/newsletter-the-uber-ification-of-peterborough-transit/), the cycling master plan and more. Plus you get to hear Will’s ciriticism of Bill C-18.
